I am doing a complete disassembly repaint and reassembly of my SIII rover.
Keeping the tub together.. But taking the floor out, rails off .. down to tub and frame. (still on the fence about rolling the frame out, but i've got limited space) Painting each piece individually. Have it in pieces already. Wondering how much money I'm saving by doing it myself. I've never had a full paint "restoration" done. We'll assume for the sake of argument that I can make it look pretty good, after some practice and a good deal of sanding, and re-shooting till its right. I'm practicing using different paints on different scraps and things needing painting around the house. Even re-painted my garage walls with the same equipment i'll be doing the rover with. Figure I'll eventually do a fender side and keep re-doing it till i can get it right. Nothing else i'll be painting will be quite the same as painting birmabright with automotive paint, so I figure I'll have to practice on that sooner or later. I'm figuring prepping, sanding and painting with the surface rust on the bulkhead sides and radiator support piece.. a couple things I had to straighten.. to pay to get that done without disassembly would be in the range of $5k.. but I've never had to buy much of a paint job before. Like to brag to the wife about the "money I saved by spending all this money"

You can drive out to Barbers Point Air Station. There is an aircraft painting company out there and they might give you a good price to paint your truck. I use to work out there for a short time, they will paint anything.
If you want to do it your self. Hold the paint gun 4 to 6 inches from the part to paint. As for my self I mix my paint 1 part pigment, 1 part hardner with 1 part thinner. Make sure you have an in line water seperator on the air hose Last edited by BIRD : 05-19-2008 at 04:12 AM. Reason: add more info |

painting with a compressor is old school. But If I had one i'd have one.
I've got a turbine. 4-6 inches is close even by HVLP standards... If I fail totally at making it come out I was going to take the front clip and everything down to a paint shop in pieces.
