Doh! ok...it's been around 15 years since I rebuilt a Series gearbox. It's amazing what you remember when someone reminds you.

I read "fully adjust transmission brake to stop the transmission from turning", probably under some other procedure.

I found a way to do it tho.
I wrapped a nylon web strap (like a tow strap) around the output then around my workbench leg. I turned the bolt against the strap tightening on its self. Worked just fine, and I didn't have to open the box top again. Reverse the wrap to tighten.

BTW, just took it up and down the street on P-Brake, as I still don't have the new MCL.
I just got up to maybe 20 and as I pushed in the clutch to stop and back into the driveway. It popped out of second. I guess it does need that rebuild. Tightening the nut on the back didn't do anything.

It seems to be getting worse quickly. Maybe it's my imagination. ANYWAY. I ordered all the gaskets to do the transmission swap. They didn't send me all the gaskets I wanted, but I ordered them. Time to re-order the one they missed. Need a couple tools as well. But, I'll drive it enough to get it inspected and on the road once the mirrors and MCL are in.

Personally, I'd just use "The Right Stuff", available at Napa, instead of the paper gaskets unless you want leaks. That's what I did on my tranny, and it was the only thing that didn't leak on the Rover. Just use it sparingly as you don't want big globs oozing inside.

oh.. i use both..
the thing is, on the front anyway, the gasket is thick enough to want to mess wit tolerances on the input shaft
