Leak, left front wheel - Land Rovers Only

HI
I have an oil leak (in a 1964 88), not from the swivel ball seal, but between the swivel housing and the break anchor plate. I have a couple pics on my blog. one more truck

Any thoughts?

No experienced LR mechanic near by, but a good one who says he can do anything with parts. I am handy (I'm a plumber), but have never worked on vehicles before (aside from oil change).

Nice looking truck.

I would check and see if the wheel cylinder is leaking. If not you might need to pull apart the the hub and check the seals there. Its been a few years since I have taken mine apart so off the top of my head I don't remember what seals are in there. I did the entire section when I added lockable hubs.

Scratch and sniff. You'll be able to tell if it's a hub or brake leak.
If it's gear oil it would mean you'll need a new seal, and on a vehicle that old you will very likely also need a stub axle distance piece as they often get grooved where the seal rides.

And if it is the seal, make sure you get a double lipped seal as they last WAY longer. Distance piece gets carefully cut/chiseled off, new one gets heated up and drifted on with a piece of pipe. It doesn't hurt to put hylomar on the stub where it sits either.

Mechanic took it apart smoothed out some bumps, made a gasket and now it is tight. There was no gasket there.

Now onto other problems...

Your description didn't point to the hub seal.
