Leaking clutch - Land Rovers Only

i recently noticed an oily deposit on the drivers side below the engine in and around the spring.
I checked the clutch fluid reservior and it was bone dry! Now i know why i was having trouble engaging the gears!

I have taken the panel of and the seals around the piston are dry. It is all very tight and i am having trouble tracing the leak. Any ideas where to start looking? I have checked my green repair book and it is not very clear where to look.

adscan,
If your clutch slave and master aren't leaking, I'd suspect the flex line between the two. Fill up the system and have a pal actuate the clutch while you poke around for leaks...

bogatyr, thanks for the advise.
i have checked the master and that looks dry and free from leaks.
where is the slave located? i suspect it may be that or the connecting pipe? should the pipe be a metal pipe or rubber?

I've got a late IIa and the slave is on the right side of the tranny...it's prolly easiest to find underneath, look for the cross shaft that goes into the tranny, and it'll sit right above that. If you have a series 3 the linkage is a little different, the the slave oriented differently...but I think it should be around the same place...

yes i found it, i have checked it and it appears to be leak free. as des the copper cable to it.

the leak is on the left of the gearbox below the reservoir?

Hmm, so left hand side of the gearbox...that's where your fill is...also, if it's coming from up higher than that it could be the selector shaft seals.

But, if you have a leak onto your LF spring, and you have a LHD truck, I'd investigate the steering box...

Hmm, side of the engine could also be that feeder tube that runs from the block to the head, at the back of the engine...just copper crush washers to keep that in place...

it is a RHD landy. i am pretty sure the fluid is clutch fluid as the reservoir was bone dry.

when i removed the cover plate the piston and rubber seals appeared to be leak free. what other points (below the fill reservoir) could it leak from?

We should have the same MC...so that has a hard line going to the flex line junction, then the flex line goes to the slave. So, I'd guess any of those junctions could be at fault...especially if we're talking hydraulic fluid here and not gear oil...

check inside the vehicle around the clutch pedal as if the master cylinder is leaking it will runn down the pedal and on to the floor look for reeling paint where the brake fluid has attacked the paint

Its actually funny that someone else having this problem. I have a new master and slave cylinder which dont appear to be leaking, however, I do have clutch fluid leaking out somewhere and somehow. There is clutch fluid on the chassis below the master cylinder but I'll be damned if I can see where it leaks from. no fluid in the cabin though. It only leaks a little, so that I only have to top it up every few months, so I sort of left it as one of those landie leaks that add to the character of these beasts, and carry on with the top ups. If you do find out where yours is leaking from, I would like to see if mine is the same. let us knopw how you go.

dickfox it seems i am not alone then! after checking the master, slave and pipe work it seems leak free. neither is there fluid in the cab by the pedal.

if i find out where the leak is coming from i will let you know.

Have you chaps actually removed the slave cylinders as it will probably leaking into the bell housing

Hmmmmmm, no I actually haven't yet. Will do that and see how it goes. it must be leaking in there. It might explain why when I out the clutch in when I start her up after a while she squeals a little. I just put it down to her talking to me!!!haha
