Default Mounting a Stereo?

What are the different ways the people have mounted stereos? I have mine mounted with a strap under the dask on the passenger side and not real happy. I know a cubby would likly be best, but big $ for those.
I am thinking bout mounting on the centre seat base facing facing up.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!
Oh yeh, it's a 67, 2a, 88.
Thanks

If you actually want to listen to music in a series truck, buy an iPod.

Or

Go to your local NAPA, and in the huge catalog, they have several cubby boxes. One intended for a j**p, works very well in a Defender, for some cheap price like 89 or 59 bucks. The ones sold by LR people for Defenders is a pleather covered plywood box, and though so are the ones NAPA sells, they are way cheaper. They actually have a padded arm rest that works, are big enough to hold my 10CD Blaupunkt, and the head unit fits nicely into the front edge, facing vertical.

I built my own cubby, not a work of art, but it works... all the electrical accessories are wired through blocks in hte false bottom, and all electrical wiring going out is now quick connected using colour coded 4 pin trailer connectors. The radio is vertical in the front compartment. however, being a vertical mount, the cd player does not work if you are moving. However the best feature of the radio is a usb port directly on the front to run (and charge) your ipod, as well it has an SD card slot in the front for all the music you could care for. I actually do not even have the antenna hooked up, since I have a1 gb card in it plus the 1gb mp3 player. Before this cubby was built, I used to have the radio strapped to the rear bulkhead behind the center seat. It seemed to work ok there, but once again, it was a vertical mount, so no cd.....

When I bought my series it had a toughy security box instead of the center seat. I was going to swap it with the original in my defender, but I think I will leave it in the series. Although they aren't cheap, it is very nice and MUCH more secure than anything else I have seen, and has a great spot for the stereo.

Is the toughy box the same width as the centre seat?

Andrew,
Check on the side of the radio and see if it has a screw adjustment, one on either side, for vertical or horizontal mounting. My Blaupunkt has this feature, and I know several of the dashmount radios also have it.

we ordered a new fiberglass headliner from a company in the UK, it has an area where you can mount the head unit and two 5.25 inch speakers right above your head...i also plan on getting two 6x9's and mounting them in some speaker boxes right behind the rear bulkhead

I also hung my radio from the top of the footwell but as it comes with remote control there is only a problem when someone is in the passenger seat. (Their legs block the signal) but I suppose the passenger can opperate the radio. It also plays MP3 files so all of my music is on one disc so there is no messing around trying to swap discs.

Bragan, is your headliner a LaSalle? How well does it fit and was it easy to install?

Terry, the strero is a cheap one.. and does not have that feature. I bought it because it was cheap, and took both the sd digital card and had a USB port on it. I never use cd's anyways anymore, everything I have is digitised and is on either mp3 or jump drive. That is the great thing about the usb port, you can use jump drives in that stereo as well as it actually charges the Ipod while you are listening to it. The only problem is that everyone at rallies wants to use the radio to charge their ipods.... so now I have a 1gb sd card in it, so I can still listen to the country music that makes the truck run nice, while they are charging....

Default LaSalle Headliner Pics

here are a couple of pictures of the LaSalle headliner that we just got the final install on. (of course the saying holds true take the time you think the project should take and multiply it by two)

the fit did require some trimming however it fit in fine after that, as for getting it to fit....it took about 10 trial and errors to get it looking clean
We hope to have the truck back this weekend

Smile Lasalle Trim

The headliner pics Bragan posted are made by Lasalle Trim. The headliner is a fiberglass based product, very sturdy, but very light, about 1/8" thick. If anyone wants to inquire, or tuck away for future reference,, here is the e-mail and website.
e-mail: lasalle.trim@virgin.net
Website: http://freespace.virgin.net/lasalle.trim/

Liz is great to deal with and the lead time is short. They have various products for the Series and Defender. We also bought the door trims. Kinda wish we had bought the window trims, but too late now, as shipping is pricey from way over there in the UK. Will post pics after installed. Nice folks to deal with!

You really do not need a whole new head lining. You can get shelves that fit to the inside roof about the windscreen, or you can make your own. A good place to mount your speakers, CD player, map storage and CB and all clearly visible.
