Default Newb 2.25 diesel owner looking for a mechanic or engine rebuild kit

Does anyone know of a good diesel mechanic in or near Northeast Ohio? Or, where can I find a rebuild kit for a 2.25l diesel?

I recently picked up my 1973 Series III w/2.25 diesel. The body and frame are beautiful but the engine is blowing oil and smoke out the crankcase ventilation. The PO told me that it needs rings.

So, I want to compare the cost of doing the rebuild myself vs. having a mechanic rebuild it (or, at least short-block it).

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

I'm not aware of any "kit" at any of the usual suspects. You can get partial kits, like a gasket kit, ring set, stuff like that. But for the most part everything is sold as a set.
Gaskets
Valve guides
Rings
Pistons - usually sold individually
Hot Plugs
Valve springs
etc.

I do know of good mechanic in NE Ohio...you!

I recently rebuilt the 2.25L diesel in my 109". Had the same / similar issue you have. I pulled and rebuilt the head, popped out the pistons to re-ring them and hone the cylinder bores. I am a novice driveway mecahnic and had never worked on a diesel and it was easy. Buy the green Land Rover Diesel Service manual. They are a bit pricey...but worth thier weight in gold and very easy to follow. No major special tools required, just organization and cleanliness. This also gave me the opportunity to replace the rod bearings, rebuild the alternator & starter and replace the water pump, radiator, hoses, gaskets, injectors, etc. I am a 'while I'm in there' kinda guy, and now I know the status & age of all those components. The whole project took about 2 weeks, working a few nights a week and weekends. Now my 2.25L runs like a champ...okay it's still a lump. But it is as good as can be for what it is.

...and now to answer your question

D.A.P. in Vermont has every bit and bolt you will need. I got everything I needed from them. Give them a call and they will set you up. They also have a great website with exploded view parts lists to get started.

Got any questions just hollar... cheers!

If you were closer to my neck of the woods I would do it for you. But since you arn't then I would strongly suggest that you invest in some BSF tools. Rovers North has them for three arms and a leg but they are worth it.
