Default Series 2 gear box bearings

Hi Everyone,
I have got my gear box out and apart, and am desiring to know how to determine whether or not a bearing is tired and needs to be replaces or if it should be put back in. Sight inspection is reliable when deterioration gets to a certain point, but what then? Does everyone just put new bearings in regardless? Also, can someone give me a ballpark estimate on what a complete set of bearings might cost?

Thanks

I generally install new bearings, heavy duty versions if available.
I usually just get the numbers off of them and get them from a local bearing supply house.

Thanks Tom,
What does a complete set cost in Atlanta? Once it is back together, how much if any play will be in the main shaft that engages the flywheel? Lastly, do you know of a site with photos for a step by step rebuild? Thanks

Well, I've gotten the bearings I've needed for probably no more than $30 US. And that was probably more than what other's have spent if they source by bearing number as Tom wisely suggests. I don't know of a step by step site. You really need to invest in the workshop manual to rebuild the transmission. I'm doing mine now and without the book, you don't have any of the details as to tolerances between gears, and all the maddening details.

I suppose if you are a pro, you could bypass that shop manual, but otherwise, it's probably a wise investment, you'll use it over and over.

This link opens on page nine of a collection of photos. Scroll down till you get to the gearbox pics. Not the whole answer but worthwhile IIRC.

I have found that it is easiest to remove the bearings when the bell housing is hot. Just put it in your wives oven and bake it for 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees. The bearings will slide right out. This technique works but it can be dangerous if you don't have thick gloves or your wife catches you :lol.

Thanks you guys. That is helpful. I will bite the bullet tomorrow or the next day. Do an of you happen to have the SKF, Timken or FAG part numbers for my gear box? It is a Series III even though mine is a late IIA with the beefed up mods.

That way I can order them straight from the bearing house....if you have the seal numbers too, that would be great.
