Question Series 3 1982 2.25 DieselGear Box

Hi

The gear box of my Series 3 diesel has worn out.

I am finding it difficult to get a second hand replacement as I am in Srl Lanka.

However I have been able to find a Series 2 gear box or 2A I am not sure. what difference will it make to the performance of my S3 ?

Will it effect - top speed? , Fuel consumption?, off roadablity ?, Hill Climbing ?

Could it be fitted directly with its bell housing or do I Ihave to use my S3 bell housing?

Please let me know theassistance will be appreciated.

Cheers
Nilhan

Series II boxes do not have syncromesh (not an issue, you will just have to learn how to double clutch..). Effects on gas milage and such will not be noticible (I think first gear is a slightly different ratio but 4th is still 1:1 on both..). Clutch slaves are in slightly different positions, but I think you can use the II slave in a III without any hacking of the frame (I think going from a III to a II and if you have a II frame you need to do a little modification... I will let someone else confirm this tho).
There is some debate that the late IIa's are more robust than the early II and the III but honestly and truely, in my opion anyways, there really is not much difference. I have had both in my truck (came with a IIa and after the third gear stripped, I put a III in mine, gotta love syncromesh for the gf...). This is one good thing about the Series trucks, you can use parts from a wide range of years.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks very much for the valuable information.

Just one more question.

The gear box housing of my S111 has the following number

5766530A LM22W

Another gear box housing I purchased from a scrap yard has the following number

528237 D LM22W

Can the model or year of manufacture be identified from thes numbers ?

Thanks and best Regards

Nilhan

A quick email or call to ashcrofts in the UK might be worth your while. They are very helpful with identification and such. There is a website for putting those numbers through, but for some reason I cannot find it on my comp....
From the numbers, the original looks like a suffix A gearbox, and the other looks like a suffix D. The frist set of numbers should be the serial (ie give you the approximate age of the gear box. ) the A and D are the suffix and the last set is the gear box number. being that you have the same last numbers, they should be a straight swap, however, internally they are a little different.
I might be tempted to pull the suffix A apart and see what it really needs to rebuild. If I recall, they have a slightly lower first gear, which is a little better off road. However, I believe the D has a stronger shaft in it....... as I say, look up Ashcroft and they will sort you out with info. They know soo much more than I do about trannies...
