My 1962 Series IIA 88" has recently begun to sputter when I accelerate. It gets worse once the engine has warmed up and it causes a very jolted uncomfortable ride that is nearly impossible to drive. When I rev the engine in my driveway I smell unburned fuel and black residue comes out of my exhaust pipe. The engine makes a spluttering noise almost as if it is running out of gas even though my tank is full and the fuel screen is clean.
The engine sputters a little bit when I am in neutral and rev the engine but it gets really bad when I am driving it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what this may be and how I can go about fixing it? Thanks for any help.
Is it something inside the fuel line, or can you see it without taking it apart? The fuel line goes from the fuel pump directly to the carburetor, with nothing but connectors on each end.
Check the vacume advance hose for leaks. then undo the fuel line from the carb and work the fuel pump manualy. It sounds like you are getting enough fuel but it is not burning properly. When was the last time you put new spark plugs in? Another thing to check are the contacts for your points. They may be coroded.
The last time I put in spark plugs was a couple hundred miles ago. I checked the vacuum hose and couldn't find any leaks but I have not checked the contacts. Thank you.
Thanks everybody I appreciate all the help. It ended up being the points. They were at 4/1000 and wouldn't open any further than 6/1000 so we ended up replacing them with an electronic ignition. It runs much better now and there is currently nothing wrong. Now we are finishing up making a tailgate.
I have used the pointless ignition set up and it worked fine until the cheap wiring that they put in it went south on me. A good thing to do is keep a spare set of new pionts and asociated guts in a zip-lock bag with your tool kit in that box under the driver's seat. Murphie's Law: Break downs will only happen in the most inconvenient places. Like atleast twenty miles from home in the middle of BFE.
