Can someone tell me how to tell whether my Series III has 3 Main Bearings on the Crankshaft or 5 Main Bearings, short of dropping the sump and which model has the Forged Steel Crank, Thanks in advance, Regards Frank.

The main differences between 3- and 5-bearing are:
1) The colour the block is painted- 3-brgs are painted a light green colour, 5-brgs are a terracotta/maroon colour. 2) 5-brg engines have a ladder-frame web casting around the bottom of the block to provide added support to the bearings to stop the 2.25 diesel's occasional habit of snapping crankshafts. 3-brgs do not have this web casting, the block faces being 'smooth'. I'm not sure about the cranks themselves- I thought only diesels had forged-steel cranks, but I'm willing to be corrected by someone who actually knows. Jack
