I've got a 1981 Series III Diesel. It jumps out of 1st & 2nd gear when it is not under load. What is the easiest fix? Is it best just to find another box and put that in or is a repair fairly straightforward. Excuse me, but gearboxes to me are Witchcraft.

Hold the shifter while in those gears....
Probably your gears are getting worn, allowing the slip out. The other option (and the one that I would look at first...) is that your detent springs/balls are seized/worn. Pull them out inspect, and possibly renew first (should be able to do that in the truck. While you have the top of the tranny off, then have a look at the gears, if they are worn, you should be able to see slight angling on the faces of the gears where they mesh. If this is the case, then yank the tranny, order aprropriate gears, and have the manual close by.... or order a new box from ashcrofts, if budget allows.... then you can take your time and work through the witchcraft.... ![]()
