Default Series III - Stuck Low Ratio gear selector

Hi people.
I have a problem with my Series III at the moment. Having recently had to use to the low ratio gearing (ok, ok,.....my Landy spends most of it's time on tarmac!) I now can't slide the selector back into the forward position for HIGH - so I can't get it out of low ratio.
4WD (yellow) selector seems to be OK.
The vehicle is driveable (just) - but obviously limited speed to prevent transmission wind up.
Inspection underneath and can't see anything a miss with the selector linkage and ball joint.
Removed the inspection cover on the top of the transfer case - where you can see the operating shaft of the High/Low selector - and again I can't see anything out of place. Oil level perhaps a little low.
But I definately can not shift the selector into High ratio. I have tried applying force - but dont want to break anything.
Is there any chance it could be due to in frequent use?
Can anyone help?!?

Were you in rough terrain at all? I've seen the stamped metal dust cover on the front of the front output housing get hit and collapse, preventing high range from being able to be selected.
Have you tried backing up to make sure the driveline isn't bound up?

Hi, you said the yellow knob is fine just to make sure you've covered all options first, does the spring have decent tension? The second thing that might help (it did with mine) I put the main gearbox in neutral then I pull up on the yellow while simultaneously pushing the red forward. If this doesn't work you can take your tunnel cover off and see if the little L shaped pin on the red selector is off kilter and not sliding into the hole by the dust covers. Mine was off so I WD40'ed it and then adjusted the spring on the yellow and it finally shifted out of low range. Good luck, Nate

Drive forward with two wheels on the gravel shoulder or grass or something else the tires can slip on if they need to. While driving forward, push the red lever forward, this will eliminate any issue of "wind-up". By the way, it isn't the gears that wind-up but the tires; then they put constant pressure on the gears.

If this doesn't let you shift, you have a mechanical problem, likely lack of lubrication to the shafts, or as mentioned, a dent in the cover or rock or stick jammed in the linkage. The yellow knob not coming up has nothing to do with not shifting out of low. It only has to do with not shifting out of FWD.
