Despite several teething issues (see other posts) my 73 swb series 3 takes me on a 30 miles round trip to work about half the week, I have to divide the week between that and the Triumph
![]() What kind of advice are you after? If you're looking for one to buy then all the usual things apply. I was unlucky in that I had a fan belt break, cook the head and wreck a cam bearing. So I suppose I would say if you plan to drive one home take a full service kit and tools. For daily driving I love it, I hate modern vehicle, too insulated, it's like driving around in a cotton wool ball, and it's far too predictable, I get a new noise every day with my Landy ![]() Keep an eye on all the fluids. Get a loud radio. Enjoy!

Hmm...good question...
In previous muscle cars, one problem I had to deal with was getting to school smelling like Gasoline. Is this something I'll have to deal with again? (not that I really mind..haha) What's in a series in-truck tool kit? What are some real world MPG figures? What's the capacity of the fuel tank? As Qs come to mind, I'll post them...

I drive mine daily.
Gas mileage sucks and the tank is tiny, 10 gallons or so.

MY diesel gets about 17 MPG, but I'm the only one in the US with my particular setup. My petrol got about 11 or 12.

I drove a 2A 88 for almost seven years as my only vehicle. I was half the age I am now, and would stay home a damn site more than I do if that's all I had to drive today. It got 15-16mpg, in an 11 gallon tank, but who cared? Gas was 77 cents a gallon.
I carried a set of points, plugs, the little bits, but don't remember EVER having to do a roadside tuneup. It was perhaps one of my top 5, in reliability, and bottom ONE in year-round comfort. |

Before they started dumping salt on the roads again.
I was driving mine 40 miles round trip to work everyday. Never had a problem. ![]() In Sept. we took it on a 3000 mile trip through New England. Carried some tools and spares but lucky for us we never needed them. I have a new Weber and a Discotech electronic distributor.

My 1972 109 was my only vehicle for over 4 years... If you are gonna drive one as your daily (especially your only) driver then you need a lot of patience, a good parts source that can overnight almost any part you need, and be meticulous about your maintence. There is no such thing as "I will get around to that" because it will bite you in the butt on the coldest day of the year.....
I recently bought a ford pickup truck as my daily driver, the missing appointments for work because the truck was down was no way to run a business. You really need to look at your situation and what you can and can't live with. They are great trucks, a lot of fun, and real head turners, but if your job requires you to be somewhere at a certain time, everytime, then you really should be looking at something else for your daily driver, or possibly look at new employment... ![]() That being said, I loved driving mine everyday, put close to 25000 km a year on it and miss it terribly some days. There is not much you can't fix on your own (even replaced the head gasket one time on the side of the road..) If you do go ahead with it, get a good storage box in the back of the truck and start to compile a spares kit.... full set of ignition parts, rebuild kit for the fuel pump, a good set of wrenches/screwdrivers. Good luck with the search....

Drew, I'll still have my D1 but as soon as I turn the IIa into the DD, the D1's going to get an overhaul, so technically it will be my only vehicle for some time.
Good thing you mention the bit about meticulous maint. Ever since I moved up to GA, I've acquired a "fix it when it breaks" attitude with my D1...but in the last three months I've started to get on the ball again. Good post Drew!
