Does anyone know if a SIII gearbox will bolt on in place of an SII gearbox? I have a Holden 202 engine with mounting plate for an SII, but want to fit an SIII.

Take the bell housing off the SII and bolt it onto the SIII and it will fit.... otherwise you will have issues with your clutch slave clylinder and your frame. Other than that, they should be a straight swap (you might need to use the complete clutch system off the SII, I forget, it has been a while..)

A SIII bellhousing will bolt up to the SII engine mounted plate I understand.
The SIII input shaft has a oil seal where as the SII has a spiral on the outside diameter of the input shaft that is designed to screw the oil back into the trans while rotating. You can put the SII bellhousing on a SIII trans but you need to swap the trans layshaft was well. (I just did this) Or you have to notch the frame to use the SIII bellhousing as "pickuprover" stated to clear the clutch slave cylinder.

I beleive that if you want to swap the internals, there is a little machining in the box to be done.... I would say notching the frame to allow for the slave cylinder would be a better option then (not positive on the machining, but I think there is some, someone hopefully will have more info on that..). Alternatively, there is a way of putting syncro in the series II box (look up ashcrofts in the UK and give them a hollar, they know just about everything about these transmisions that there is to know.)

The SIII box I bought had been sitting around outside for sometime apparently and the guy I bought it from promised me it was PERFECT! I asked him if it shifted though the gears and he could spin the input shaft though all the gears. He emailed back that everything shifted fine and felt great. B.S.!! I could not even shift the trans without soaking the rods in penetrating oil a couple days first. Never could turn the input shaft. So watch out for "DUSTYKOWBOY" & Mountain Trading Co. on Ebay selling Land Rover parts!! Got in touch with the seller and sent him this picture. Said it wasn't of his trans. So I sent him a picture of the cover which included the serial number and the rusted out breather. Than he told me he wasn't a trans expert! I just wanted a couple bucks back as it wasn't a total loss, never happened. ![]() LIVE AND LEARN ![]() Sorry for the rant.

I used the SII bellhousing and clutch input shaft.
SII clutch mechanism. SII trans case housing. SII main shaft. SIII 1st gear, 2nd gear, (with synchros) and SIII reverse gear all installed on SII main shaft*. SIII small reverse gear mounted in the back of the case. SIII layshaft You will also have to use the SIII shift forks. *I don't think the SIII main shaft will work with the SII clutch input shaft which you will have to use if you are going to use the SII clutch mechanism. Remember no seal on the SII clutch input shaft, hence the reason you have to use it with the SII clutch mechanism. Or you call use the SIII clutch set up and notch the frame cross member. I didn't want to do this and I hear the SII clutch mechanism is more robust.
