I just took apart the gearbox on the week end. I havent had much time to do a good inspection of the bearings etc but the source of all the problems is definately reverse, it has about half the teeth it is ment to have. So looks like I have to get a new one of them. Over hear is Oz, i usually get all my parts from a place called British Offroad, but I think I had better shop around for a cheaper price. Also, when I I spoke to the guy there, he said the price depends on what suffix the box is. I have had a look on the box, but I'll be damned if I can see any letters. Where do I find out what suffix it is?
Yeh I have a copy of the green bible, I would have been lost with out it, and another good thing about it, I will have a pretty good idea as to where ev erything will go back, unlike when i usually take things apart. Thanks for the help everyone. Also I am going to buy a spare LR 6 cyl engine for $50, with all the biots and pieces still on it like the starter motor, dist etc. pretty cheaqp I reckon. |

If its just one part you need to replace, then nice one!
I found a number on mine, its located on the transfer box, on the right hand side when looking forward, not sure if this is the right number though, as it has no letter suffix. In case you still want to fit a series ii gear box, the latest issue of LandRover World magazine came today, and in the Q+A section, is posed a very similar query.... Answer... " - A series II box will fit but from memory you will need the matching clutch cover (is this the bell housing?) to get the correct clerance between the release mechanism and the release bearing....(SIC)...The series IIa transfer box is fine for the job if it is in good condition. |

I found the suffix letter I think, mine's ans 'A'. it is on the top cover that covers the selectors. I had taken the cover off so no bloody wonder I couldn't find it anywhere.
So I probably could have just swapped the gearboxes over with out too much worry. Atleast I now know what condition mine is in now. |

Clutch cover is a term used in place of "clutch pressure plate", and refers to the assembly that bolts onto the rear face of the flywheel, comprising of a steel ring that contacts the rear side of the clutch friction lining, pressure springs (coil or diaphragm) and the pressed casing.

Hey guys,
I have just finished rebuilding my gear box. I put it back in on the weekend. I have only taken it for a small test drive, it seemed ok. But does reverse usually make a bit of noise? It is just the normal noise reverse on vehicles make but just seems extra loud. Thanks fopr all the help, it was quite a task, and bloody whitworth nuts and bolts...... Just one more question, does any oil go in the lowrange box thingy???? I know that sounds really dumb, but I can't see where you cna get it in ore anything. Cheers, Dick |

If you have totally re-built the gearbox, or have fitted a new reverse gear system, then I'd expect the gears to make more noise than usual before they've bedded in with each other. I've just re-built the 3rd-4th gear on my SIII and not only was it very stiff to change, but when in 3rd especially it made a huge amount of whining. However within 2 weeks of driving it about it quietened down and smoothed out.
Do bear in mind that a Land Rover doesn't have much in the way of soundproofing, and the gearbox is a pretty old design, so even in perfect condition there'll be some whining coming up through the floor, and reverse being a very low ratio will make more whining than the others- basically I don't think you've got anything to worry about! The transfer box is draining by using the main drain plug under the gearbox, but it's filled using its own filler plug (go figure!). On mine the filler plug is at the back of the gearbox next to the handbrake drum, just below the PTO cover plate. Jack Last edited by jozg44 : 12-13-2004 at 07:47 AM. |

Transfer and main boxes have independent drains and fillers. The main box filler is in the middle of the left side. the transfer filler is between the speedo housing and rear bearing housing. The 4wd drive unit (attached to front right of transfer box) is filled by the transfer box. Afetr filling run for a few dozen yards, the top up until the oil fills the various cavities.
Agree about the reverse noise; it has straight cut teeth, so is the noisiest gear, and will need to bed in if replaced. You're probably also being mildly paranoid (like I get) post rebuild, and listening for noises that were there before but hadn't noticed. |

The series 2 box will fit you will need the clutch brackets and shafts, you will also require the s2 clutch pressure plate which has a large boss on it the s3 plate doesnt.1st and 2nd gears will be non syncro but generally the 2a box is a tougher unit than the s3 box.Its an easy swap.Reverse gear will be noisy until it beds in with the other gear thi may take some time. The secret to a good series box is good lubrication use the best oil you can afford most series box failures are due to poor oil and basic maintenance.

Well, thats all good news. I think I have done everything right. I have taken her for a good drive and nothing happened. I felt really stupid though when I was putting all the floor back in as i forgot to stick the 4wd up/down yellow knob gear stick through the little hole, and I couldnt be botthered pulling the floor out again. It would be a lot easier with the floor out to stick it through rather that from beneath. Not a hell of a lot of room underthere. All fun though. So I am back on the road looking forward to the beach this summer. I will have to get a photo of her and put her up here.
Catch you around guys. Dick |
