Default SIII registering hot?

Okay-

1973 88, 2.25 petrol running on 88 octane.

Gauge shows the truck hot, like on fire, within five minutes of startup. Outside temperature doesn't matter. Two weeks ago when it was 30F outside it behaved the same as it did today when it was 48F.

Temperature sender was replaced. No joy. After the truck has heated up I can see the fluid moving around inside the radiator, but it's only just luke warm ... I can swirl my finger around in it. The upper radiator hose gets warm, but the return hose on the bottom doesn't. Even after it's been running for a bit I can still reach my in the engine bay and it doesn't feel hot.

Any ideas guys? Everything else on the to do list since I picked her up has been taken care of, but this one ... this one burns me more than the time I busted all my knuckles trying to start her with the hand crank!

Hiya

The engine doesnt seem to be overheating, no pressure on the hoses, sender unit new..only one thing i can see...your gauge is shot ?

I used to have one that was stuck in the red all the time, got around it by fitting an aftermarket gauge that gave the real reading. Never looked back since ;-)

I can't remeber off hand how the sender works. Try disconnecting the wire and see what the guage says(with key on of course). Then try touching wire to ground and see where guage reads. If I remeber correctly it should read hot now. If that is the case, check to see that the wire isn't grounding out anywhere on the head etc. Other than that check the grounds as well.

Thermostats are cheap and easy to replace. If your voltage stabilizer on the back of the dash panel is shot you will usually get high readings on the temp and gas guage. You can replace it with a solid state unit from ebay that will help it read true. Is the guage well into the red?

I had a 2.25 that ran too hot all the time. I finally discovered the PO had the thermostat installed so it rubbed on the side of the housing so jammed, letting very little water into the rad. It gave a warm top hose, cold bottom hose and a high gauge reading. Sure was nice when I fixed it.
