Default slow rover

Greetings,

I have just aquired a 1970 rover diesel runs great, however I cant get it to go over about 35/40mph. Am I missing something or is this as fast as it will go. Is there anything I can do to get it up to hwy speed?

Thanks for any help or suggestion!

I know they're slower, but that sounds wrong... What seems to be the hold up? R u using all the gears? Is it redlining the rpm's at 35-40 mph.... Tell us more

Default slow rover

Greetings,

I think I am using all the gears(4) in high range. It feels like I run out of gears about 40mph with the rpms really high. If I put everything in low it has an incredible crawl. Im new to these contraptions and would like to be able to drive it often. thanks for the reply!

Well mine tops out at about 50mph - but 35/40 sounds really slow.
Are you maxing out the revs? I was timid in the early days of ownership, but now I rev it up and it makes decent speed. Is the engine in tune?

Is that up hill or down? I have diesels and they are a lot slower than gas rigs. An overdrive will help your situation emencely. As will a turbo charger. Send me your email address and I will send you pictures of my turbo setup. And if your interested I have a faery overdrive that is for sale.

Greetings,

I might be a little cautious on the throttle but I gave it a good run a few minute ago and I might have hit 45mph, but it was revving hard. The diesel engine seems to be in tune it doesnt smoke at all and starts right up without much of a preheat cycle. I wonder if it has some wierd low gear installed at some point. How would
i know for sure what gear is in it?

when was the last time you checked the injection pump timing? On the flat you should be able to get it up well over 50.

The pump was just rebuilt. I will have the timing checked today, I think it must be OK the engine really runs smooth.

It may be that you are just not used to the amount of gear noise and engine clatter a series make when revved up to highway speed? Remember a series is running about 2900rpm at 50 mph in 4th gear. That engine was also only rated at 60hp @4000 rpm when it was brand new, 39 years ago.
