Default Stabilizer Bars for series 111

I am interested in fitting stabilizer bars to my S111 diesel.

a) I feel a stabilizer at the rear will help handling and prevent the roll of the car.

b) Is it advisable to fit a stabilizer bar on the front as well?

I would like to have your advice on mounting points and types of bars I should fit. Any information will be greately appreciated.

Regards

Unless you have converted to a coil srping setup, why would you need a sway bar? They would take any of the articulation you have with the leafs and through it out the window and I would have no idea where to tell you to attach them...

Cool Stabilizer bars for series 111

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your comments, I have not changed to coil springs. The vehicle still has leaf springs which have been replaced with leaves available in Sri Lanka. Original springs are not avaible in the country. The vehicle therefore has a tendancy to tilt from one side to another when loaded with all my camping gear etc. I notice a difference in level when the fuel tank is full or empty! This is why I feel a 'not too stiff ' stabilizer bar from a car not a truck may help, eg. - a bar from the rear suspension of an Austin Cambridge / Morris Oxford.

I believe you are correct about restricting the articulation which is necessary when offroading.

I am keen to know if anyone has any experience with fitting stabilizer bars to a series 111.

Cheers thanks

Nilhan

I have never heard of someone doing this, so I cannot be of much help, I am sorry. I would suspect that it might be easier and less hassle to figure out a new spring configuration (maybe import a set of parabolics from the UK that are designed for the truck, if that is possible.. ) Most people have the opposite problem where the springs are too stiff (me included) and are trying to loosen them up a bit...

Hi Andrew,

Thanks again for your advice. Looks like I have to rethink this out again.

One question - Will shortening the canvas axelstraps help? or will they just snap if they are too short?

Cheers

If you shortent them (trying to make them limiters for every day driving) I would think they would snap. THey are designed to prevent the axle from going too far in articulation off-road (read, slow and little pressure..) You could try, as mosttrucks run without them, so even if they snapped, then the only time you would miss them is when at extreme axle articulation which only occurs when off road.... My truck has never had them since I got it....

I don't even have anti-sway bars on my coilers. I've been driving series rovers over 30 years and it's never occured to my to install them.

Do you have a roof rack on your vehicle or stack things high in the rear.

You could also try increasing the offset on your wheels. This will give additional stability.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your advice, I think I will abandon my Idea. Probably try to import a set of Parabolics or replace the present blades with new blades.

Cheers

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes I do have a roof rack and load it a bit I have my camping gear in plastic crates which are about 15 inches tall. This probably causes the swaying a bit on the tarmac.

I have infact replaced the original wheels with Standard Defender Rims which give a wider track - the ride is more stable with these rims, I still use 205x16 tyres

A picture of my Landy @ ( Bundala National Park Sri Lanka ) is in my profile if you care to take a look. - Not sure why it does not get attached to the postings)

Cheers
