Default Starting dog removal

I have two questions;
1 - is is really necessary to remove the radiator to change the front timing cover oil seal coz it doesn't look like it to me?

2 - What size is the starter dog (crank handle dog), I want to try and get a deep socket to get this off.

Cheers

Nic

I always remove the rad to do that. If you are lucky, the previous owner has replaced the rivets on the mud gaurd with the screws, so you do not have to pull the whole timing cover off. I suppose you might be able to pull the starter dog and replace the seal without the rad off, but I usually just pull the rad as I hate having to reach around corners to try and do things. I think the screwdriver might be hard to get between the rad and the mud gaurd, and I would hate to put a tool through the rad......
