Default Tranny oil change

Ok, so i decided to change the oil in my tranny. So far i havent had to do it, but only because i was extremely lazy and didnt want to deal with it. I suck, i know.

When i dropped the drain plug i checked it out, inside is a large void. Inside this void was lots of little bits of metal. Most of it was copper in color, but some looked a bit like steel.

I had a new 3rd/4th gear set with synchros put in a while ago. Could this be from the gears before i replaced the gear set?

Do the copper or brass synchros deteriorate normally?

I did run it almost dry once, almost.

Thanks!

O, its a SIII stock tranny.

As long as they could not be described as chunks I would not worry, espcially with new gears and syncros wearing in. I bet your next gearbox oil change is cleaner.

Yup, what Kevin said. Sounds like normal syncro wear. You'll always get a bit of light steel filings too, which is nothing to worry about as long as there not too big. Differentials will also have a bit of fine steel dust in the oil.

Do yourself a favor and invest in a set of magnetic fill plugs for the gear box, t-case, diffs and swivel balls. They're very cheap and grab all the steel in the boxes between fluid changes so it's not floating around inside. The drain plugs are pretty unique but all the fill plugs are standard pipe thread.

If you want to make your own magenetiv plugs... get some rare earth magnets that are just smaller in diameter than the plugs and epoxy them on the plug... does a wonderful job (rare earth magnets are stronger than the magnetic plugs..)
