Not sure if there was a tranny change from the II to the IIa, but IIRC some of the gear ratios changed somewhere in the tranny's life cycle...maybe from the C to D suffix...

Series II has a dip stick on the side of it and higher gearing in 1, 2 & 3 but lower gearing in the low range to make up for it when off-road. Series II trannies also had a smaller layshaft diameter for the front bearing. Series II oil level plug is also too small to stick your finger in to check the level. Why would you when it has a dipstick for that?

My understanding is that the trannie changes happend with the change to IIA, sometime around there, and I don't know if it was at the same time, the T case got a bigger transfer-gear shaft, later different gearing for low range. The bigger shaft might have been before the change and the higher gear in low when they made the change, but that is speculation on my part.

The higher 1, 2 & 3 were in tranny series A & B and had the lower geared low range. With the introduction of the C trannies, they had lower 1, 2 & 3 and a bit higher low range.
