have any of you guys heard of trouble caused by running larger tires on a 1971 Series IIA transmission? i know i've seen a guy on the gon2far website put the 109 1-ton spring mounts and shackles on an 88 and run 35's but i can't remember if it was a IIA or the later Series three gear box.
the reason i ask is a friend of my dad was talking to someone down at the local Land Rover dealer who said that the larger tires cause problems for the IIA transmission. any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance, Greg and Bragan. by the way the tires we have on are BFGoodrich M/T's 33x10.50R15's |

The engine, transmission and transfer case should be fine with a 35 inch tire. Its the axles that are the weak point. I run 34 super swampers and I have broken a salisbury axle shaft before. I'd hate to see how long a 10 spline rover axle in the rear would hold up to it.
The salisbury is a cheap way to get a strong axle in. Detroit lockers are cheap and here directly I should have a line on some chromoly shafts. |

yeah i was planning on putting in a detroit locker as well as a truetrac up front, with some 24 spline axles and some, i believe, great basin rovers(?) HD drive flanges while we were doing the restoration on the entire truck but decided having not driven it any more than 1/2 a day we had better wait and decide what kind of stuff was nescessary for the off-roading we were gonna be doing before we go and alter alot of the suspension components
and yes i did figure the axles would be the problem since the 109 1-tons, which i believe had the salisbury, came stock with the 9.00R16 tires which range in size from 34 inches - 36.5 (Michelin XZL's) inches in total diameter |

I'd say forget about the true trac. Everyone I've ever known that 4 wheels a lot has had a tru trac, and got rid of it. If you are going to go all out (which it seems you are) then skip the tru trac.
Another option, and I would highly recommend looking into it, is the toyota conversion. This way, you do not have to find a salisbury axle, you can just keep the stock axle housings and install some nice HD equipment in there. Also you have more gearing choices. 4.56, 4.88, 5.29 and possibly 5.71s. It'll cost a few more bucks but it is far superior than anything rover. I did talk to Bill at GBR, he said it would take roughly 2 grand to install HD 24 spline stuff and an ARB locker into my series front axle. For that amount, you could have chromoly shafts, an E-locker, 4.88 gears, and bullet proofness. A pretty good idea. |

One question... why does everyone want to go with the bigger tires... I find that they do not do as wel off road as the narrow 32's... the gearing and everything has been set up for them. ALmost everyone that I know that has gone to bigger tires has horsepower issues while offroading.. going to 34's only gives an inch extra clearence on the diff casings, but as far as I am concerned it is out wieghed by other problems.. too much torque on the shafts, too much draw on the old engine's horsepower. I think that the money would be better spent on other things... like parabolic springs, onboard air, recovery gear.... just my 2 cents worth....

I run 33" wrangler MTR on my landy. My series 2a box handles that size fine, I used to run 900-16 with no hassle. As for the diff I've got a salisbury. Just be gentle and loving.
