I am a mechanical engineering student at union college and i have been thinking about a project of adding a turbo to a 2.25L gas motor. I feel like it could be interesting and I know that someone used to do it. I have thought about the fuel system and considered switching to a simple efi system. I went to look for turbos an found them for 3 or 4 hundred which seemed cheap. I am unsure about the cam and the compression ratio. what do you think?

The low compression would be good for a turbo, but I'd make sure you have a 5 main bearing engine. That and be prepared to go through lots of exhaust valves as they seem to burn/break easily. The cam is probably good as there is no overlap from what I remember. You could even take the oil for the turbo off the line to the head if you needed. BTW, the 77 normal hp was at the crank, not the wheels. 80 at the wheels is sweet however!

I agree with the premise that it would be a good project. Get an 84-85 5 bearing longblock. Get hardened valves, and make sure the exhaust valves are sodium filled for heat issues. Get some HD, or titanium valve springs. "T" the oil line to the head, just because it's easier. I think your biggest problem will be designing an exhaust manifold that will allow mounting of the turbo, and still have clearance for everything else. One thing I have always hated about engines with the intake and exhaust manifolds so close to each other. Great idea. Go for it, and good luck.

The UK. lol. They came out mid 1982 year, and were used in the SIII until it's end in 1985. Maybe some early 90's in 86 might have had them, but I believe the 2.5 was used in all but maybe the prototypes.

I thought most if not all SIII's had the 5mb engine, though maybe I'm wrong.

I've got a mid-year production 78', and an 81' SIII 109's in the driveway right now, both with 3MB engines in them. Both original to vehicles. My info was based on info gathered on lr4x4.com, and originally posted by Mrs. Turner at Turner engineering.

DAP carried turbos for the 2.25 back in the 80's. Al had one installed on an 88. No idea if they are still available. Ring them up and ask to talk to Al.
