Default weak engine & high temps

Hi everyone, I have a 1967 pickup 88. The truck was running great and then I went off roading on a hot day and gravel roads. After the day was over I got backin the truck and drove it for about 5 min. before I noticed that the temp gauge shot to the red. (this had never happen before) I drove it a little bit longer and then when my foot was not on the gas (going down hill) the truck stalled. I would wait 5-6 min to let it cool down and then it would start again. This happen about 4 times before it would not start. I towed it down and I got the truck started again, but it idles really poorly and stalls. also the temp gauge still shoots to the red. Does anyone have any idea what could have happen or what the problem is and how to correct. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Cheers

Check that you have rad fluid..... IF you have rad fluid, wash out your rad as you probably have gunk in the fins preventing the air from getting through and cooling the rad.

As for the engine.... when the gauge is in the red, STOP THE TRUCK!!!!!!!! you probably have seized the engine... at least you have burnt your head gasket by the sounds of it. NEVER RUN AN ENGINE THAT THE TEMP GAUGE SAYS IS TOO HOT!!!!

You might want to take a look at a new thermostat.
