Default Woe is me!

So, new injectors fitted (2 1/4 diesel), bleed, bleed and bleed again and finally, elle va!

Smooth as Devon cream (well, not as rough as usual) not too much smoke but that irritating ticking noise is still there. Take it for a spin and it is a flat as a pancake. Still only has about 3/4 power.

Is this a deranged distributor pump or have I got brocken piston rings, or possibly valve spring problems.

I know diesels are simple but I have played with simple petrol engines for years and they are just different.

Any ideas from diesel fetishists?

Default Smelling pisstakes

I don't know, drown my sorrows with a bottle of truly disgusting Australian wine (diesel fuel tastes better than this one) and my ability to spell broken fails me!

As you say, diesel engines are inherintly very simple, especially stone-age all-mechanical ones like the 2.25. The only things that can go wrong are the injectors and the injector pump, or it's not getting enough air.

First, the simple things. Is the air cleaner free from gunge and silt in the bottom, is the oil in it fresh and is the air hose to the engine in good condtion (not internally collapsed). If you have servo brakes, is the butterfly valve in the inlet manifold opening and closing as it should (I limped home at 20 mph in mine simply because the butterfly valve had stuck closed and wasn't letting enough air into the engine).

If it's not these and all the injectors are new, then I'd lay the blame at an Injection Pump that is either very badly adjusted or simply broken. Since I'd expect a badly adjusted one to be chucking out smoke similar to that seen coming out of a steamship I'd be thinking it needs replacing.

The ticking may be a bent/broken link/valve/other miscellaneous diesel gizmo inside the pump itself. They are not designed to be stripped down or serviced, and even diesel specialists aren't encouraged to touch them.

Take the rocker cover off and check all the valves are working as they should- it may be a bent spring or rocker not letting a cylinder breath properly.

I'm fairly sure you don't have anything major like worn piston rings. When I got mine it had worn bores, no piston rings at all on 3 cylinders, all the cylinder crowns were bubbled and warped, and 2 of the hot-spots had cracked open. It still started, ran and drove normally- it takes quite a lot to kill a diesel.

Default rocess of elimination

Thanks for the helpful hints. I'll just have to check each item in turn.

Engine first, wine later The other way around leads to more grazed knuckes, but slightly less pain!

Ticking noise sounds like a valve-train problem i.e. dislodged pushrod/ very large valve clearences

As for the lack of power, unless it is something serious in the heart of the injection pump, or related to the ticking noise, then im willing to bet that the pump isnt recieving full throttle travel, have you checked this/ do you know how?

I agree with you mate, ie tapets need adjusting.

I notice you have a 92 RR with a VM. I have an 88 RR with 2.4L VM and it is a bit gutless
