Default 10 spline axles

Well, my front brakes were dragging, rotors looking pretty thin, and of course my swivel ball seals were leaking like a sieve, so i dove in and rebuilt it all. Lets see, i've rebuilt the engine, replaced the blower motor, and replaced the swivel seals. There can't be anything on this rig that's worse than these three. . . I think I deserve some sort of award.

Anyway, let me get to the point. With all the talk about 10 spline axles and their inherent weakness, which part or parts are prone to breakage? I would like to carry a spare. And no, i am not in the mood to upgrade to 24 at the moment.

Thanks.

The typical part that breaks is the axle or half shaft. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the 10 spline half shafts on a RRC are anywhere near as likely to break as those found on a Series truck. However, under duress, they do break and when they do they ofter break at the diff. Unless you are doing a lot of off roading, you probably don't need to carry anything. If you break a half shaft you should be able to make it home simply by locking the center diff. That's one of the advantages of having an LT230.

If you want to buy a set of 10 spline front half shafts you need to know what kind of CV's you have. There were two types found on those early RRC's, Suffix A and B. The half shafts are different for each type of CV. IIRC the half shafts for Suffix A are 24 spline at the CV and 10 spline at the diff. The Suffix B is 32 spline at the CV and 10 spline at the diff.

If, after all of this, you are interested in a set of half shafts, I probably have what ever you need. I just haven't sold any 10 spline stuff in awhile so I would have to check.

Thanks Paul. I suppose with the combo of a LT230 and a fully floating axle, i could pull it and make it home. I didn't count the splines on the CV's but do remember them being very "stubby" on the end, so probably the "A" (its the shorter of the two, correct?). I don't wheel that hard anyway, I was just curious. If I snap one I'll get one from you.

Greg, crawl under and look at the drivers side of the fron t axel...under the sterring box area, and there is a long number with an A or B at the end...

The stub axels are all short, the "teeth" are what count...My 88 RRC had an A, and I got a whole spare set of front/rear and the stubs...Bet yours may be an A, but that number tells it all...you can see it just looking under the truck...

Well, my tires, maybe I have a bit easier a look...

In 15 years of range rover ownership ive never bust a halfshaft done a few CVs but on the whole the axles are bombproof whether 10 or 24 spline
