Default 1989 Range Rover Classic (HELP) Possible transmission issues????

Hello All, New to this site.

I have just purchased a 1989 Range Rover Classic as a project car. The rover is generally in good shape. The only problem with the rover is that, as I shift the gear selector into (D) the car does not move. In order to move the car I have to shift to gear (3) then the car moves. As the car picks up speed, I am able to shift into gears (2), (1) and (D). When I come to a complete stop and then attempt to accelerate the car does not move. I again have to start back to gear (3), reverse work just fine. I'm hoping this issue is not that the transmission is shot (NO GOOD) as there is no transmission light in dash indicating there is a problem with the transmission. If someone has had experince dealing with this problem, can you please assist? Thanks
