Default 1990 Range Rover...Rattle knocking underhood.

A local mechanic...non Rover background.....says 99% sure I have a worn flex plate, transmission must be pulled, total cost $1100. The sound is barely noticeable at idle, picks up at acceleration. Does his diagnosis sound plausible? Any other possibilities? Thanks, Ken.

A few years ago I bought a DI from a fellow member on this board. The truck had high miles but the engine had less then 45K and the transmission had just been replaced. When I bought it there was a rattle. if sounded like it could have been a heat shield or broken up cat. Anyway, less than 500 miles later the crank sensor ring riveted to the flex plate sheared off and the truck died. Granted the configuration of the flex plate on your RRC is somewhat different but my experience goes to show that anything is possible. Have you pulled the inspection plate from the bell housing to see if there are any telltale signs of impending doom?
