Default 1990 RRC A/C question

Had a new A/C compressor installed. Blows nice and cold. Problem is with the A/C on the truck cuts out. It has a bad hesitation when the A/C is on. Anybody have an idea where to look? I sure would like the A/C to work for the HOT Texas summer ahead. Please let me know what you think. A/C off the truck is fine no misses or hesitation.

Thanks,
Doug

Do you mean it doesn't idle fast enough that it dies?

Default Starts and idles fine

The truck starts and idles fine. It starts to cut out on acceleration or highway speed. Have not checked belt tension as I had the A/C work done. With that said, I have had a problem with alternator belt slipping. I have that adjusted pretty tight. The alternator light has been on for awhile but hasn't drained battery. In the morning I'll check the Alt belt tension and the A/C belt tension. Am I headed in the right direction?

Thanks for the help,
Doug

I'm not sure if you are headed in the right direction...
BUt...
The belts can be TOO TIGHT. It will prematurely wear out bearings in those devices. Also if they are too loose they will squeek under load. So try to find the happy medium.

So it idles fine and when you turn on the AC it cuts out during acceleration. AND you have a battery light on. Is your battery up to the snuff. Maybe the cut out is an under charged battery and the additional load from the AC is causing problems.

The AC belt has a pulley tensioner if i remember correctly, which supplies the correct amount of tension. However too tight is not the problem here. The belt is along for the ride until you turn on the AC. So if it was too tight it would be dragging all the time, not just when you fire the AC. If you had an old compressor i would say you have a bad bearing that is causing drag. but it sounds like to me since your altenator belt is slipping and the light is on, the altenator can't keep up with the electrical load placed on it when you turn on the AC. How old is the belt? If its slipping, its time for a new one. Even if its not cracked, it can glaze and slip.

Does this RRC have an IAC motor? If the hesitation also affects the motor, the IAC is supposed to raise idle for a second or two to compensate the extra load on the engine, so it does not stall.

If this is so, the motor, either has to be cleaned or serviced. Then again, you say this happens on the road with higher RPM rates, and the clutch on the compressor cannot engage unless there is fault in that circuit somewhere.
