My husband and I are going to look at a 1991 Range Rover for our 16-year old son's first vehicle. We have never owned a Range Rover but like the looks and are considering a newer one for our older son.
This one was posted on Craigslist and looks to be in decent shape but just want to find out if there is something specifically with the 91's that we should be looking for. |

Really, not a great car for a 16 year old, unless mom and dad are loaded, and paying for everything.
Its expensive to Fuel up Parts are expensive, and not always avalible locally. Not every shop knows how to repair it. I would advise against it as a first car for a kid...With out supplimented income, the average kid just couldnt afford it.

Problem with much of the rust is that you have to remove carpeting to get to really see the damage but having said that.......
Under the car check forward foot wells. Under the hood look at inside fender skirts, and on the firewall. There are three brake lines running across...look at the metal behind that. Then get under the rear bumper and look at the end of the floor.....watch the stuff falling in your eyes....then look under the rear wheel wells, where the seat belts attach.... Call the LandRover dealership and ask IF they'll work on it, and how much an hour. Then budget 10+ hours a month..... Get the picture?

I think its good that all these guys are setting your expectations straight. Unless the truck has been impeccably maintained, its going to have a fair share of issues. I have a 91 with just under 200K on the clock and its mostly sorted out. Even so I expect to spend a mint on it any month now.

A couple of things to look for,
Remove the expansion tank cap, (when cool obviously) LOL check level & smell for the scent of exhaust. if it's empty or smells of exhaust, move along (unless you don't mind replacing head gaskets) Listen for that tell tale constant velocity joint pop or clunk with the steering wheel cranked maximum both ways & in both forward & reverse. Go here & look to see if any of these apply to the one you are looking at. Range Rover Remedies One thing you WILL find is a close knit community of owners willing to offer advice & help. Also look around for recommendations for an INDEPENDENT rover repair shop. Harry

They are definitely a beast of burden. easy to work on and always in need of work. if daily repairs are on your adjenda then buy away... if your 16 year old son loves to get greasy all the time then i highly recommend this vehicle !!!otherwise i hope you have some seriously deep pockets.
