Default 4.2 with 2 dead cylinders

All. My friend called me during the Xmas holiday. She has a 93 LWB RRC with 2 dead cylinders, mechanic said so.I'm thinking electronic issue, but she said he did a compression test. How available are these engines? Is there any other swap i can use? 4.6? Any ideas are appreciated. thanks.

I would get a second diagnosis, what where the simptoms which made this mechanic come to the conclussion of two dead cilynders?
what is the running condition of the engine, overheated, not serviced, died running?
how did he verify it?
we need more info in order to give proper orientation as to what to do.

x2 what Carlos said. what are the compression figures by dead cyl's does he mean no compression no spark both?

4.6 swap can be done but is very expensive, sticking with another 4.2 or some of the old buick motors are possible for swapping.

Cool

The engine has newer cylinder heads, and new radiator, less than 2 years old. (going from what my friend told me) It suddenly started running this way she said, very rough. She brought it to her mechanic, she said that he did a compression check, and it had 2 dead cylinders. It has new plugs, and spark from what she told me. Seems odd to me too.

Default 2 dead cyl

seems to me, that if 2 cylinders were that bad, where there is little or no compression, there would be a good bit of smoke or the oil would be diluted with gas

Even when you come up with two no-compression cylinders, it does not automatically mean the engine has to be replaced. It may be severely carboned valves are stuck in the guides. Are the two adjacent, or no ?
Even if you dropped a valve and it got punched stright thru the top of the piston, the liklyhood of it happening in 2 cylinders is remote.
The easiest choice, if you took the easy route, is to replace a 4.2 with a 4.2, but rebuilding is easier yet.

Rover motors chew through cams. If the motor has done more than 60,000 miles, the cam would be worn.

A compression test tells very little. Need to do a leak down test. That is, they pump air into the cylinder and listen to where it is escaping, eg through the valves, rings, etc.

I may suggest another mechanic, it seem rather fishy to me that one would diagnose engine replacement just because 2 cilynders seem to be dead. highly unlikely
I would ask to investigate further to find a real reason, boy if I attempted to pull that at work I would be terminated almost inmediately.
I dont mean to sound like an A..hole but its my opinion from your comment that some one wants to get the money they spent during the holidays from your friends pocket.

Well now - that's a good thing to find out! Glad it was that after our conversation the other night. Did you end up getting it for yourself?

It always pay to get a second opinion when the answer doesn't sound right.

Not out of the woods yet. Still has an issue. This truck has many new pieces thousands spent on it in the last year or so I have the docs to prove it, and will likely be parted out, or sold to as is. to be cont.

I want to talk with someone regarding some issues. I put it FS in the classifieds. It's a nice truck with many new OEM parts. Let's make a deal asap.
