Default 4WD small gear shifter

i never change the small shifter to a low gear because i dont ever need it...however i have changed it before and it worked fine...i tried to shift it the other day (both while in neutral still and in neutral rolling) and it would not move at all...what could be the problem?

Typical for all Rovers per design.
First don't force it or you could bend one of the linkages.
Crawl under the truck with a spray can of lube or penetrating oil and spray the hell out of all the linkage, let it sit a while and then start slowly wiggling your shifter slowly pushing harder till it starts to move. If that doesn't work, you may have to go thru the console to clean and lube from above.
Good luck,
Mike

I've heard of a solenoid from either Funrover, or someone else, that a solenoid on the range shifter will sometimes freeze and not allow the shifter to move when trying to shift from high to low. Mine also doesn't move at all since I had the Rover. I follow the instructions in the center console but it doesn't budge.

It might be that solonoid that is controlled by the relay that probably failed.
Removing the shaft from the solonoid by passes the relay.

I will take a look at that or figure out an electrical issue if the relay failed.

x3 on the soloniod. My friends 94 DI recently had this problem....it turned out that the soloniod was ok, but the wiring to the soloniod was fried...either way, taking it out solved the problem.

I have a problem with my shifter- it just wiggles around. it goes to 4hi lock, but not neutral or 4low. The lever goes all the way forward, but it stays in 4hi.

Probably the linkage is broken off and needs to be reattached.

Best way to get at it is by removing the center concole, drilling out all the rivets, and removing the trans shifter. Once all this stuff is out of the way, you'll see the linkage from the top.

FWIW, I think only 93 and up RRC have that lockout solenoid. The solenoid is built-in to the shifter itself. On the disco's its bolted onto the transfer case.

On top of the transfercase. From what it looks like in the diagram above and from what I hear, it sounds like a total bitch to get to, but I ain't sure, haven't gotten under there to see for myself. LOL

Its built-in to the shifter assembly. Look at the diagram above, it's part of #6.

The lockout solenoid on a disco (LT230) is on top of the transfer case.
