Default '90 RRC..key broken in ignition...have to replace switch....input?

Forced to buy an ignition switch because the key has broken off inside and a locksmith was unable to get it out. Do I buy the complete unit or just the switch? Must it be new or can I get away with used? Any tips for the mechanic doing the work? I really appreciate anyone's input who's dealt with this. Thanks.

worth trying - not sure this will work, but it wont cost you anything and in worst case you are just messing with parts that are already broken:

once you remove the steering column (ignition) lock assembly, see if you can dis-assemble it further. try to see if you can get the lock barrell out (the thing that turns when the key, having been inserted into it, has moved all of the tumblers out of the way). be careful when removing it to prevent tumblers from falling out of the barrell. If you can get the lock barrell out, you might be able to get the broken key piece out. a dental pick/probe or other strong, narrow diameter metal tool could be used to push and pry the broken piece out.... then as long as you have another key, you are in the clear.

if its not possible to get the barrell out of the assembly, get a whole new assembly. it will come with a key, and you can then key the door locks to that key.

keying the door locks to the ignition key is accomplished by removing the door panel, dis-assembly of the door lock mechanism, removal of the lock barrell. again be careful as tumblers are spring loaded and can come out. you then insert the new key into the barrell, and this will cause some or all of the tumblers to be pushed out of the barrell. this would prevent the barrell from turning due to interference, and its how this type of lock works. you can take that barrell with the key still in it to a bench grinder and grind down the tumblers ever so carefully (dont damage the barrell, and dont loose tumblers). grinding them down to the profile of the barrell will achieve rekeying the lock to your new ignition key.

good luck
