You can take it out. But if it is actually working, you will have to upgrade your springs to take the extra weight that the self leveler normal takes. Taking it out will also affect you articulation off road, but the stiffer springs and the leveler out will improve on-road handling.

I love the self-leveler... it works REALLY well and supports a lot of the weight of the truck without having harsh springs.

Would the articulation be better or worse?

Articulation is worse. Firstly the self leveler acts as a pivot point for your rear axle. This effectively forces the other wheel down when one goes up. It improves traction on the lower wheel and improves articulation. Secondly, it allows softer springs to be put on the outside. this allows the wheel to move more with the same weight transferance. Again improving articulation. The only time it retricts articulation is if you are going to go for a wild spring setup with dislocation cones, etc.

I can tell mine used to have it, and was removed. However, the A arm on the rear diff is still there and attached to the axle.

It's almost guaranteed that these units aren't working anymore on any classic unless they've been replaced. |

A lot of them still work- in fact, most of them that come through the shop still work. They aren't 'overt' in how they work because when you load up the truck it will initially sag, then after a couple of blocks it will have equalized. Then when you unload, it'll sit high for a couple blocks and then lower. It's actually a very effective system. If you remove it, you REALLY need new springs. The spring rates on them are 30-45lb lower than a truck without the Boge unit.
