My bad on the nut/bolt issue. I had to spin 10, just not of the same type.
If I could buy you a beer, well... Turns out it was the main gear in the same axis as the drive shaft that broke in 3 places. Would that be the crown gear? And why would that let go? I had to go with a 10 spline that was available close by due to time constraints (I have to be road worthy by Wednesday).

Sign Guy, I hope that it had a 10 spline in it previously. You can't fit 10 spline axles to a 24 spline rear end and visa versa. The stub axles are different and the axles are different lengths.

It has 10 splines, I was referring to Paul's offer on the 24 splines. Next time it goes I'll upgrade.

Changing over to 24 spline rears on older Range Rovers is pretty easy stuff. Doing the front is an entirely different matter. On my old truck, for example, it's easier to just swap in a complete axle assembly (best from a Disco) from rotor to rotor (then you also get nice vented rotors as well). I don't know when the change occurred but in doing the swap on my truck you also need the newer (post '87) radius arms as well (they're thicker at the axle casing). Things like the swivels mounting to the casing with seven bolts instead of six and a number of other small things make the switch a lot more complicated than simply changing hubs, flanges and half shafts.

I have only changed the centre to 24 spline. All the stub axles, etc are standard for the 10 spline set up. It is very easy to upgrade the front centre to 24 spline. As per the back of mine, there are after market axles that allow the conversion.

Mine is an 84 and no it does not have ABS. But for any 10 spline classic you can get axles from Maxi-drive that will run from a 24 spline centre to the CVs that run in a 10 spline diff.

I changed one of my 91s(with ABS) to 24 spline ARB carriers. My other 91, a Hunter, (no ABS) is stock 10 spline............for now.
