Traced a pesky oil leak to behind the grille of my 93 RRC LWB. Removed grille and the leak wasn't coming from the pipe connectors but from the middle of the trans cooler!
![]() I pulled the cooler and cleaned it off. Seems the unit has rusted through, emitting a nice fine mist of crap on everything behind it, and now that it's out i can't drive unless i want to shoot 60psi of trans fluid stright up in the air. So what are my options? Replace with OEM, USED, aftermarket, or is there a conversion to a later style (read less expensive) unit.

I would go with either a new oem unit or convert to a new aftermarket unit. I wouldn't waste the time and effort on a used one that could blow out after all that work.

Having just experienced the same fun, I did go the used route, if that’s what you happen to end up doing, I'd recommend Grampa's Retired Rovers in VT... just my 2 cents. He sold me a used cooler for a very good price.
The swap of the entire unit will take all of 10 minutes; just make sure the ground is good and covered underneath, trans fluid is nasty stuff to clean up! As recommended to me by a few members on this board, it's not a bad time to check the rest of the plumbing leading to the cooler itself, it was something I never would have checked otherwise, and found an elbow that needed replacing as well. |
