So...while in the dealers for my leaking seal, I'm told the rear brakes are shot and I need rotors and pads. Yeah, yeah, yeah...so I decide the dealer has had enough of my cash and I'm gonna do this myself.
Rear brakes are now done. New, Upgraded rotors and pads on the rear. Have a bad caliper that will be replaced as soon as the new one arrives, then I should be ready to go. The front are basically new, spec'd out about 10% less that new...so I'll leave them for now. Question for you guys: How hard are those front rotors to replace compared with the rear. My first time doing anything like this, and I've never worked on a 4WD or FWD, so I've never had to pull rotors with the CVs in them...is this gonna kick my butt? Thanks, Too Slow ![]() ![]()

Same as the back, easy. Unbolt caliper and move out of the way, remove drive flanges, remove hub, unbolt old rotor (place it in the wheel you removed to keep it from spinning away from the wrench), clean mating surfaces, degrease caliper bolts, and rebolt caliper to hub and torque to spec with blue loctite. Slap it back together and take the opportunity to clean out and repack your bearings.

Yeah, the front brakes are relatively easy, just hub style, but this case the hub is removable, otherwise hub rotors for our trucks would be outrageously expensive.
And Kevin, nice idea trick with putting the hub into the wheel to make removing the rotor-to-hub bolts easy. I will keep that in mind later down the road. ![]() BTW Todd, I dig those cross drilled rotors!

looking good, you will find that the fronts are as straight forward as the rear. Seeing your shop floor, i am so jealous, curently rebuilding my swivel balls, and the yard is getting pretty messy. will post a pick so all can laugh.

I was advised "not' to run drilled/slotted rotor on a rig being used for offroading, due to mud building up and reducing their effectiveness.

Muddy...I've heard the same thing. If I ever got in so much mud that it was caking in my brake rotors, I think I'd have much more to worry about...LOL. Actually, where I am, there is not that much serious mud to worry about, I tend to shy away if it's more than a few inches.
