Default 95 LWB rolls forward in Park!

Hey everyone,

My 95 classic LWB with 113k miles on it has an interesting issue. I parked it and noticed that it had inched backward about 6 feet when I came out after about 30mins. If its downhill towards the front, then it will inch forward slowly, very slowly, until its on a flat surface. Its a very slow move so you have to stare the the tires to see it inch forward or backward. I have to pull the Ebrake when I park or Christine will kill someone!

Please help.

Check to make sure the shifter cable (DS of transmission) isn't loose, stretched or otherwise bunged up, loose at the mounting point, etc. It's a 14mm nut if I recall correctly. If the cable isn't able to move the detent lever on the trans far enough forward, the parking pawl won't engage and the car will most certainly move.

On the RRCs with the viscous coupler transfer case, a broken CV joint would cause this to happen. Very common problem.

Sven - a broken front CV joint would cause that much slack? wow...
Just trying to picture the mechanical interconnectedness of it... "thigh bone connected to the leg bone, leg bone connected to the foot bone" sort of thing....

Busted parking pawl??? That's my guess or lowboys scenario

I can't see how one broken cv joint would allow the whole vehicle, with 3 other tires still engaged in the drive train, to roll untill it hits a level area. That and the fact that it does it soo slowly...tells me that the tranny is slipping in park...parking pawl.

Thanks a lot for the quick info everyone. Sven, it all makes sense now. One one CV its covered in oil, not to mention the last time I went camping, the truck got stuck on a muddy incline that she used to climb with ease. The last snowfall, it would drift sideways like its not getting power equally to the wheels. Could all this be associated? Again, its offroad behavior has dramatically plumetted since the rolling in park fiasco developed.

Yeah It sounds like a blown CV in your case...Jack up the front end and spin each tire, the broken side wont spin the front driveshaft. Could also be the inner axle.. Just find out which side is broken and take it apart to inspect before ordering parts.
