Default 95 lwb tailgate latch handle help...

I just bought a 95 classic lwb and will be needing to replave the rear hatch switch. My question is about the key operation. Is it locked when the key is verticle or horizontal? I am just trying to make it work for now. Thanks.

Also, anyone know where I should start looking for a replacement?

Nick

Wait a tic...there's a switch?

Where is it for the love of God? Mine is stuck and I'm about to employ blunt tools and brute force.

its below the 3rd brake light. it was 89 or 90 when it was coming standard on the classics.

By switch, you mean the lock cylinder itself right? The spring on mine is worn so bad that it moves almost freely and doesn't seem to do much when it is pushed in. I believe it is supposed to be the button that releases the window. My problem is I cant tell when it is locked or not, so I might be trying to shut the window with the side latches in a locked position.

I thought you were talking about two things, the lock button/cyl. & the electric lock actuator. the spring in the cyl is commonly borken. If there is any ice in that lock mech. I'd give up until it warms up. there are a lot of tricks to thoes t/gates. i'll try to get back later and tell more if you need.

now that i have more time to properly read,I see that the hatch is open and your having troubble closing it. Right? the spring in the lock button is a coil about 1/4" I.D and about 3/4" O.D. Its not a very easy one to find localy.
If you find that it dosn't latch propperly when closing, make sure the rubber seal hasn't dropped from the upper and is making a bad contact with the lower gate. If all is fitting well, then along the the bottom of the upper gate there is a metal trim held in with phillip screws, remove trim as well as the 3rd brake cover, you will see a rod with a barrol nut. I think its about 6 or 7 mm. back off the jam nut and adjust the barrol nut. this will adjust the throw of the gate catches.

Great. I actuall went down to the boneyard today where they have 4 parts vehicles. I bought the entire handle with a nice lock cylinder and replaced the entire thing. It works perfect now. It isn't keyed but locks with the electronic locks so will work fine for me. Thanks for all the help!

My hatch is stuck closed...only on the right side though. I've PB Blastered it and messed around with it for a bit, but I'm hesitant to pry on it further. I can't see the latch mechanism from the inside.

Any ideas?

take tumbler cylinder out of lock mechanism. insert key in cylinder, which will push tumblers out around the cylinder - careful hold them from falling out. use a sanding wheel to grind down the tumblers that are sticking out until they are flush with the cylinder. the lock mechanism is then essentially rekeyed to your key.

If you climb into the back, can you see the long metal trim pieces along the bottom of the gate? remove them, that will gain you access to the rods.
