Default abs brake pump runs even when car is off

i have a 92 classic county lwb. the abs pump ( i think it is abs pump. it is below the master cylinder)continues to run or whine when the car is turned off. the only way to get it to stop is to disconnect the battery or unplug the pump itself. otherwise the brakes seem to work fine

ACK!!!!
I never wrote up the ABS pump repair/replace for my website.
When it starts running like that it has caused the relay to fail. The relay is under the driver side seat. I think it's the middle one when you take off the side panel. In any event there is a relay right next to it that looks exactly like it, that you can swap out to test it. If your pump is failing it will start to eat these relays. (At least I think that's how I remember it). I drove for a month with the panel off and pulled the relay everytime it was running after I shut the truck off. But in the end it burned up the ABS pump anyway.

x2. That was the problem with mine (well, only about a 1/4 of the problem) but make sure you fix that soon! Otherwise your pump is a goner. About a grand to replace.

If you are lucky you can find a used one for around 700$.
And I wouldn't wait another minute to get it fixed. You can burn a pump up in just one 30 minute drive home.

Wow buy it now price is great. 60 day warranty too.
You'll need to replace the relays if you replace the pump. It's a must.

I don't mean to hijack but it's the same topic.
The abs pump on my '93 keep going off every 10 minutes or so but only when the engine is running. I assume I am loosing pressure. Any ideas?

Sorry to butt in, but I have a problem along these lines. My pump runs, but sounds like it's grinding or trying to pump air. I opened the bleeder while it was running and bubbly fluid came out. Does this mean my pump is shot? *Please say no* Thanks

Well unfortunately, if I understand what you mean, I think your pump is shot. My pump sounded similar when it died. It seemed like it just needed to be bled, but with no success.

9 out of 10 times, the accumulator goes first. The diaphragm goes, loosing the nitrogen cushion. Any original one out there in a classic is on it's last legs. When the accumulator goes, you'll only get 2-3 pushes on the pedal before the pump needs to kick on again. A new acculumulator, and you'll get 7-10 pedal pushes.

Well, today I got to wondering how this pump works. I ended up pulling it off, and dismantling. I found that the motor runs well, and smooth. Next, I pulled the pump apart. Inside the pump, there is a "rotor" which has holes around the perimeter with little metal pins that seem like they should slide out upon motion. Only one slid out freely. I took a small file and gently cleaned the surfaces on all of these holes so the pins moved freely. Next, I cleaned all other debris out of the pump after taking the rest apart. I re-assembled and put back on Rover. I tried bleeding out the pump, but got a low pressure and air filled flow of fluid. I decided to try the brakes. They work now, but don't seem quite right, I do have boost pressure though. Should I try bleeding at the "ball" and the abs block? Thanks
Dan
