Cool ABS & SRS questions

I just have a couple of questions about the ABS system on my 95 RRC LWB.

When I start the Rover, the ABS pump runs for a couple of seconds. I start off and go, and then you can hear the pump run for 1-2 seconds after each stop I make (maybe it's more like every other stop). Is this normal? The ABS light stays off and the truck stops just fine.

Also, any way for me to reset the SRS light? It's the only light that stays lit on my dash, believe it or not I guess it should be that way since I've got a brand new 4.6 in this thing. I'd like to turn the light off- any way to do so without seeing the dealer or just pulling the light?

One last thing- steering shake around 60-62 mph. Goes away under 60 and over 62 or 63, rides beautifully. But between 60-62/63, it shakes badly through steering wheel. I plan on putting new Bilsteins on (incl. steering damper) soon, should that solve this issue?

Thanks

all the rovers with abs that i have owned the pump cycles just like that. I have been told to replace the pump relay as it can stick closed and burn the pump up.$$$$$$
as far as the shake I have a hell of a time keeping tires balenced on mine.

I agree a shake at that speed would most likely be tire(s) unbalanced.

Sweet, I'll get the tires balanced. Thanks.

The ABS pump running after each stop has nothing to do with the relay. It means your accumulator is shot. With a good accumulator, you should be able to get between 7 to 10 pumps of the pedal before the pump restarts.

Your SRS warning light needs to be shut off by the dealer. You can take the bulb out, if you don't mind the airbags not deploying if you get in an accident. I guess you'd feel kinda stupid then.

I should have noted that the relay replacement was unrelated, but should be replaced for good PM.

try pulling the battery on and leaving it unplugged for an hour then reconnect. I dont for 1 second suggest this is a solution, so people, don't flame me. However if light goes out never comes back, you may have just had a glitch of some kind. If it comes back immediately, you have a fault which is failing the SRS system check as soon as you turn the key. If it comes back while driving, you maybe have a sensor problem or a bag problem. In either case you do need to get a shop w w rovacom or testbook to diagnose the exact SRS error.

The pump running is almost certainly a pressure leak at the accumulator as people have pointed out. I have this problem on both my 4.6 and Classic. On the 4.6 its much less acute, but on the Classic pretty serious so as soon as i'm done making my other repairs it will go to shop to get new accumulator installed.... unless of course installing a new accumulator is straightforward and folks on this site can walk me through it.

Regarding the tire vibration - balance can do this. Also look at the tires -are they worn? Do you see a scallop pattern along the inside or outside edge? If so the suspension could be causing the tire problem which is in turn causing the vibration at speed. Suspension components which I directly know can cause this: shocks (caused this problem on my 4.6), suspension bushings (caused this problem on my wife's Mercedes). I'm sure this is just my limited experience and some other factors can also cause this problem.
