I know this will sound like a lot of other posts but i have been having a noise that i can't figure out where its coming from. It sounds like a whirring and it gets faster as i go faster but almost stops when i lay off the gas when moving. It also is very apparent when i am slowing to a stop. For a while i was thinking that the first sound was in my belt because i just replaced the automatic tensioner and water pump but i don't think thats it because it ran for a while with no noise after i replaced them. My thoughts might be something in the drive line but that doesn't explain why it goes away when i lay off the gas. Does any body have any suggestions on what it might be or what i can do to find out? Thanks.

IF the truck is sitting still and you rev the engine do you have the sound?
If no. Could it be something in your transmission? It is still RPM related when you are moving. Only transferring the RPMs to the axle and other bits when moving. Does it make the noise in 1, 2, 3 and 4? |

i think after listening more there may be two problems. One is more of a clunking sound that is when im slowing down below like 15 or 20 mph. It is present regardless of whether or not im pressing the brake. The other noise only seems to when i am in 4th gear going about 35-50 and my rpms are between 1000-2000 there is a whirring that varies in frequency according to the rpms. This noise goes almost completely away when i let go of the gas pedal and is not really present when i am speeding up from a stop. Any ideas? Thanks.

sounds like your drive shafts is going bad. mine did the same thing. it will vibrate when i put my foot on the gas. when i take my feet of the gas the problems go away. it became annoying to speed up. feel it right under my feet. I drove it to midas for estimate and on the way back i got on the highway and it broke and busted my transmission. i will say fix them right now. replace both front and rear drive shafts along with all 4 universal joints.

The splines in the shaft for the slip yoke can have a lot of end play and can cause a vibration and a hell of a noise. Also if the front or rear shaft is out of phase, it can break bad news for U-joints, and I know, cause the u-joints i had on the truck earlier started to go bad, cause my front shaft was out of phase by 2 splines.
