Default axle swap

I'm planning on swapping my 1988 10 spline axles and their housings for some 94' LWB 24 spline axles and housings because they'll hold up better and have more parts for them. What do I need to take off my current axles to make the new ones work on my RRC? I know i have to swap brakes but is their anything else?

If you just want to change the centre, you can get maxidrive axles that will fit without changing and of the stub axle ends.

If you have not broken any axles to-date, I would not bother with it. You can also get maxidrive axles that will replace your 10 spline axles withoput any other changes. These axles are much stronger than standard Landrover 24 spline axles and saves you having to change diff centres, etc.

But if you are planning to get a locker anythime soon, I would get it first and get the 24 spline model and then go with the maxidrive 24 splines that are made for 10 spline sized stub axles. You wont actually have any 10 spline components left, they are just a bit longer to suit the 10 spline stubs, bearings, etc.

Good thread, I have all the parts to fit 24spline into my 1990 RRC.
I have been told it is a straight forward swap(you pull the old stuff out and put the new in). I will be addign a DL locker to it not too far after that.
Are there any seals i should be changing while i am on there?
Any other advice? I know I should upgrade to the rovertrack HD axles, but that will have to wait until I break something.

Ya but my 88' Is a non-abs axle and I've heard the front is a three piece design that brakes easily. Plus i can tade my two stock axles for these disco 1 axles and add cash And it will still be cheaper than buying the maxi-drive stuff or rovertracks. Plus GBR has barely any options for the 88 RRC's stock axles

Those 3 piece fronts are actually not bad for strength and if the outer stub breaks you can swap it in about 3 minutes. I have a full set of spare front end stuff from an '89 if you want to have spares handy. The rear end is a matter of swapping on the rear hubs and spindles and bolting in the diff. No need to change the brakes or axle tube.

TN-LRS, I am not sure why you want to go to a worse and weaker front axle setup than what you have now. Also when (not if) you break a final drive you have to replace the CV as well as they are one piece.

The problem with changing the outer stubs and bearings to the 24 spline type is that the bearings in the stubs are closer together and not as strong as the 10 spline bearings.

I think that by the time you take into account the cost of swapping the diff centre, getting stub axles, hubs, and axles, the cost of just changing the inner axles would be more cost effective.
