Default axles

I know this is a common topic but I have a 89 classic and I will have rover tym 3" springs and 2 inch spacers. I am also planning on cutting the fenders to remove the lip around the wheel wells. this should give me enough clearance for a large tire. hope fully a 36 or 37. But the biggest problem is that I am not sure what axles to switch to. I could bolt disco axles in for pretty cheap and then build them up. Or I could put dana 60's under it from a junk yard. I could do all the fab work myself confidently unless I had to change the tube lengths. I wouldn't have a problem with the tire sticking out the sides a couple inches. has anyone done this or running a 37 inch tire on a rover axle?

Switch it up to 24 spline and get Rovertracks axles and CV's

would rovertracks or greatbasin 24 splines stand up to a 37" tire locked? I would probably just put a locker in the rear and leave the front open and do a lt230 conversion.

I'd just stay with a 35" tire with that combo, much easier build. For 37s I would think you would want to go to Toyota centers and 4.88s.

X2! 35's. GBR HD front and rear, with 4.11's, or 4.75's. If you go bigger than that, run your axle tubes, but fo the toyota third member conversion, and rovertracks components.

Maxi drive Axles and CV's and a locker is all you'd need for a plenty strong setup, why ruin a Rover with Toymota Landloser bits.

We have had this debate before, but you do not generally need stronger axles due to tyre size. When you need them is when you change things like the diff ratios due to the tyre size.

Toyota centres are not going to change the strength of the axles or CVs. Toyota centres are usually used where you want a greater selection of diff ratios or you have problems with breaking crownwheel and pinions.

Just upgrade your axles. Maxidrive make HD axles that will fit 10 spline centres. They are more than strong enough for most purposes.

Well if you are going with that tire size, you will almost have to change diff ratios. Then you will have to upgrade axles. Your carrier is weak with only 1 cross pin, so that will eventually break as well. The other thing is what kind of off-roading do you do? Lots of rock crawling would need a stronger axle than loose dirt and mud.

1 cross pin? How the hell would a carrier have only 1? I thought they were 2 or 4. I don't even think it would be possible to engineer one with only 1.

Well, it's one long pin that goes through 2 gears, so yes, it is 1 pin technically, but I guess considered 2 as far as function goes.

Have you ever looked inside a Rover diff?

A diff lock will fix that weakness and give you a stiffer carrier. The single pin can cause some ovaling of the pin hole in the carrier. It is usually excessive wheel spin that causes the pin to break, not the stress of placing your drive through a single pin.
