Default Battery Drain

Seeking some advice for my neighbor who has a problem with the wiring in his 88 or 89 Classic ...

Here are the symptoms :

Replaced a dead alt with a brand new one, the truck runs great and can be driven all day. However when darkness falls, and the trucks lights are put on, the battery drains and quickly dies.

Any advice as to where to begin looking for such a wiring short?

Anyone had a similar problem before?

Do we have to make an offering to the Lucas gods?

Thanks for any insight !

Unhook the alternator at night, if the battery isn't dead in the morning, you got a bad new alternator.

Nope, strangely its only draining when the lights are flipped on. It runs and sits fine as long as they're off.

I lent him my trusty 'ol owner's manual with the wiring diagram, but I don't think he's gotten very far. It's dissapointing because this is/was the better of his two Classics.

test alternator output under load, that shall tell you, is the alt connected properly? how is the battery, does it have a full charge, does it hold charge?

My alternator was the cause as well. If you got real close you could actually hear a high pitch sound coming from it.

I had a drain on my battery and it would die pretty much over night and i couldnt find out what it was.... i took it to my uncle's shop and he said that theres a drain on one of the interior lights even though non of them are lit up... put a negative disconnect and its worked fine for me, sounds like a diffrent problem then what you have sry
