Default BW Transfer Case Clunk - Replace Chain?

While the engine in my rover is fairly new, the drivetrain has about 170k mi on it, thus making it squeaky and especially clunky.

The clunks happen when the transmission downshifts or I switch the shifter from 'D' to '3' to '2' etc...I've searched on these symptoms and after checking the drive axels for play and deeming them solid. I'm looking at the BW T-Case as the culprit with possibly a stretched drive chain.

I'd like to try to replace the chain on my own. Anyone have experience w/ it?

It's normal to have a bit of slack in the drive train. The shift from 1st to 2nd at slower speeds is also well known.

Unless it's really, really bad it very well might just be normal.

what he said. They can and will have a fairly noisy 1-2 shift. Mines also a little loud going into reverse but I haven't had any problems with it at all.

It also makes a grinding noise when cruising on the highway (not loud, but noticeable) it goes away if i accelerate or decel.

When i bought this rig the PO had all the invoices from service done by the dealership since he bought it new. He literally brought the Rover in every time something didn't seem right. It's actually funny reading some of the comments. In reading through to get a better idea of where the vehicle was mantainance-wise, I noticed the viscous coupling has just been changed and the dealership recommended the t-case be replaced soon.

I'm sure i'm getting a 'normal' amount of noise from a t-case with 170k from everyone's description. I also hate knowing there's somthing i might be able to do about it. I've found a really good deal on a chain ~$100, and the BorgWarner t-case overhaul manual doesn't seem overly complicated. I've rebuilt the gear-box and OD for 70's volvo..this cant be too different from that (maybe just slightly bigger)

The coming and going rough noise might be the differential(s) just a thought there.
