Question A/C Compressor not working

Can anyone tell me where the thermostat is for the A/C. And is it hard to get to. My compressor is not cycling with selector set to A/C. I jumped the pigtail under the hood connected to the compressor and it worked and started to blow cold air inside. I located and checked the relay on the firewall and even swapped it out with another Bosch relay. No good. On one of the wires that connects to the relay there is 12v. I am missing the signal to activate the relay. When I applied 12v to the compressor I saw a little bit of bubbles then clear liquid in the seeing glass. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

What year is your RRC? If it is pre-1994, it may have the old R-12 system, but even so, if you have a 94 or newer, and have the R-134a system, you will have what they call pressure switches on the A/C lines.

You can easily identify them by the two wires that come out of them, and the cylinder shape on the A/C line. Most likely it is bad and causes the Compressor to not cycle.

Sorry about that.It is a 1989. I believe the pressure switch is on the dryer. Does the system shut down if the levels are too low? Can you Jump the circuit to test the line or can you test the component itself. Thanks.

On my 89 it is almost always that dang relay you mentioned. I would check the fuses too. Also pull the wire off and check the voltage. More than likely there isnt any. Sorry I cant help more. Gordo

I agree with Gordo, check the electricals first.

And yes the pressure switch will disable the compressor from engaging, preventing damage to itself and the whole system, if the level of refrigerent is too low.

I wouldn't recommend trying to jump a wire to the compressor to see if it is working with the engine running, but you can try it with the engine off. This will show if the compressor electromagnetic clutch is working. And if it doesn't engage while engine running, of course check the electricals.

Good luck man, I feel the heat of summer already, and I see why everyone wants the A/C to work.

Unfortunately no, you'd have to evacuate the system and then remove the switch. Then refill the system.

Yeah, that is usually what some A/C shops will ask you to do if you have the R-12 system, is to retrofit it to R-134a. I still need to retrofit my mom's 86 Benz 420 SEL to R-134a, as the system doesn't even work.

Bad time to have no A/C. At the rate I am going I'll have it done just in time for the snow.
