I am trying to figure out the best place to mount a CB antenna. I was thinking about getting a magnetic mount but a friend tells me that those come off very easy when wheeling. I don't have a winch bumper or a roof rack yet. Any ideas??

Go to a Truck stop or CB shop. They usually have some cool brackets that will give you some good options.
The best for the signal is around the hood for a flat plane. (google CB antenna placement and read) I've seen a lot of Discos with a bracket that mounts under the hood and the bracket passes between the hood and quarter panel to the exterior and flattens out again to mount the antenna to. I used a 36' Firestick to great affect, you can even get the antenna tuned at the truck stop for a few bucks.

Thanks Todd.
I have a 4' firestik antenna and a Cobra 25 WX NW ST. I just needed an idea where to mount the antenna. I had this setup on my DII mounted on the spare tire carrier. It's a little diferrent with the Rangie though.

I mounted mine on the rear bumper in the hole where the plastic endcaps used to mount. Not the most ideal spot for range but the only time i use it is on trail rides with people within a couple hundred feet of me.

I went to Firestik's website and they have some great ideas. Here's where I'm thinking of installing it now. The hood/ fender bracket is fairly inexpensive and easy to mount.

I had a short rubber magnet-mount antenna on the roof of my Freelander and could get about 1 mile of range in the suburbs with the same Cobra unit. On the trails, it worked out just fine, if it did get knocked over (only happened once) I just hopped out and stuck it down again. A lifted Disco might have more height issues. It's not a big deal in my mind.
I switched to a Firestick on the spare tire carrier and it's about the same. I got a buddy who is into HAM radio to come over and tune it with his meters and another CB.

The best spot is in the centre of the roof. This will give the best range and reception. Just drill a hole in the roof and mount it. If you do not want to drill holes, mount a roof rack and mount the aerial on that. If that still does not meet your requirements, get a gutter mount and mount it on the roof guttering.

Yes i do like where mine are mounted as you can see in the pic above. that wont get it the way of trees as much there as much as they would on top of the roof.

I would think that smaller antennas higher up would operate a lot better than getting long antennas and having to mount them low. Anything other than the centre of a metal plain will make the antennas directional. That is, they will have a lot better reception in one direction and not so good in others. Mount it on the left side of the bonnet near the windscreen and it will be directional to the front-right. Mount it on the back bumper and it will have poor reception to the front.
