Yes, I've taken them apart. All it took was reading that you're not supposed to, and I was in there (helps to have an extra or two, just in case. There is a tiny circlip that can go 'twaaanngg' across the room, but once you get that off, it's all pretty straight forward. Actually, all you really need to do is pull the flash shield off (that's what they call the clear plastic cover, it's sposed to keep errant high tension balls of fire from getting at the reluctor and mag pickup coil.) Spray some liquid Wrench, PB blaster, or other good penetrant on the weight pivots and spin it by hand back and forth till they are free enough that the rotor shaft is very free to move on the lower shaft.
8 out of 10 old RR out there are sluggish out of the gate because the diaphragm in the vacuum advance has rusted out, or the weights are stuck. The properly functioning distributor should go a full 34 to 38 degrees advanced on acceleration, then, as vacuum goes down after the initial opening of the throttle plate, advance goes back to what ever the mechanical advance gives per revolution. OK now my elbow hurts

LOL! Thanks, and i already took it apart, put it back together, and have it installed! Yeah, it was definetly gummed up. I had to work for a good hour to get it working properly. Seems to be better now. However, my vacuum advance is shot though. I can blow air right through it. Certainly a source of problems in the low RPM range.

Okay, one more question - when i hooked the timing light to it, it would occasionally fluctuate toward the advanced side. Still sticking a little you think?

Well, my hesitation/chugging turned out to be a bad intake manifold. But I am not going to change it until I get a new top-end for my 3.9

This happened to me. Check the heater wires on your O2 sensors. They should be heated to give accurate readings when the engine hasn't warmed up. That was the problem on mine. Runs great after fixing that!

Okay, i tested them before (i think) and the voltage comes on momentarily and then goes off. What procedure did you use to test them?

Well on mine it turned out that one of the wires had become disconnected. Maybe check your connections?
