Actually an over rich mixture has a cooling effect.

Just because your fan is turning does not mean that it is working. To suck enough air the viscous coupling must lock up.

Ian

A good way to check the viscous fan is when the motor is up to normal operating temp, have someone in the drivers seat shut the motor off while you have the hood open. When the motor is then shut off see if the fan stops or keeps free wheeling, if it keeps spinning, the VC is shot.

THe fan works fine, it doesn't spin freely, it stops right after shut off. She is still not overheating as of this moment.

That is very good news!

I think everyone was correct, you prob had an air pocket in a line. After you flushed the coolant, where did you refill?

I refilled it through the cap on the radiator, then just topped off the expansion tank to the tank's seam. Then later that day the overheating started, then the day after, no overheating at all.

Next time try and refill the coolant from the silver pipe that sticks up in the air on the passenger side of the motor also and leave the heat control on hot.

I did have the heat on High for both sides (passenger and driver) while topping her off, but yeah I agree with the silver tube thing. I will keep that in mind.

Oh wow, I didn't mean it like that! Isn't it amazing that automotive related stuff, when spoken can mean two things, one; the automotive meaning, two; the dirty thing.

Damn what's on your mind HA,HA! No hidden meaning at all just called it that for the lack of the correct term. I am strictly going by my old 89's 3.9liter though, not a 4.2 could be different. I think it ran into the heater lines or something, whatever.

Just glad to hear you sorted it out.

Pat, do you have any coolant leaks? My 93 had a mystery leak for a while, and every now and then it would go into the red. Finally one day I was driving along and *POP*. The side tank blew right off the side of the radiator. Have you tried back flushing your system? Dad made up a nifty rig using 2 garden hose valves. They screw right into the radiator and the coolant line on top of the engine. With the engine off, you can hook a garden hose to one valve and let the water flow out the other, then switch them so it goes the other way. Each time you do this you can run the engine for a while as to free up any crud in the radiator, then flush again. When I had problems similar to the ones you describe, I did this several times then topped up the system with new coolant, and it still blew part on me. I put in a new proline radiator from RN, which is thicker, and all is well again. When I go home this weekend I'll take the sawzall to my old radiator core and see how badly plugged it is. It sounds like you had an air bubble in your system that finally passed. Did you run the engine for a while with the expansion tank cap off? That usually lets any trapped air out, otherwise when the system pressurizes the air has no place to go. The bubbling sound you heard was trapped bubbles trying to get to the highest point in the system.

Well the same night my truck overheated, I got it back home and with the engine still warm in the norm. range, not yet overheating, I slightly cracked open the expansion tank cap, and let out quite a bit of air, also then same night, I went out cause it was a little chilly to get some food, I came up to a light up next to this brand new 06' Dodge Ram Big Horn Edition HEMI, and I dunno what compelled me to race him, but I did and I won, then again he wasn't flooring it. Anyways, back on topic, I dunno if that quick 8 seconds of hammer to the floor freed that air bubble or not, but since then, no overheating, no leaks, so far all is good.
